Wyatt is one week old!

We can't believe little Wyatt is a week old!

We are adjusting very well to having him home (thanks to our 2 most recent visitors who have helped immensely -- Aunt Katie and Granny Fani), although we are still hoping Wyatt quickly learns that the night is for sleeping and not the daytime!

Welcome baby Wyatt!

Wyatt Alexander Jess was born on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 6:38am. He weighed 7 lbs., 2 oz. and was 19 inches long.

Here is the birth story:

Early Monday evening around 7pm, while watching TV, Wyatt was moving like crazy and it felt like he was punching me and trying to get the heck out! While it wasn't totally out of the ordinary because he has always been most active in the evening when I finally get the chance to sit down, this time it was a little stronger. Around 11pm, I thought I might have been having some contractions, but I wasn't totally sure. I took a shower to see if they would go away, but they did not.

I tried to get some sleep, but at about 1am Jack fussed a bit and I went to go check on him. I then decided I should time the mild "pains" I was having and I then realized they were coming about 3 1/2 minutes apart. I got up to use the restroom and as I was walking out, my water broke!!! It was greenish, so I knew it had meconium (baby pooped in utero) and I am also Group B Strep positive, so we knew we had to head to the hospital fairly soon for the 4 hour course of antibiotics to prevent the baby from picking up the bacteria. My hospital bag was mostly packed, but Jack's bag was not, so I threw some random clothes into a bag (luckily the dryer had just quit running, so we had clean clothes!) and we dropped him off at Tonja, Phil & Mackenzie's house.

We got to the hospital around 2am and I was dilated 4.5cm and 80% effaced. My contractions still weren't all that painful, but I opted to get the epidural quickly to avoid any pain (I am a wimp!) The epidural was placed in one try (unlike last time where it took 5 tries and an hour and a half to get it right) and began to work quickly. The nurse also started my antibiotics about the same time and I settled in waiting for progress. I watched the monitor and it looked like my contractions were really far apart so I thought I would have awhile. My OB was going to be the on-call doctor starting at 7am, so I was hoping Wyatt would wait until then to make his debut. Around 4:30 am, the nurse thought about giving me some pitocin to speed up contractions because they looked like the had stalled on the monitor, but she never came back. Then, at 5:45am I began to feel some rectal pressure and I asked the nurse to come check my progress. Low and behold, I was complete (dilated to 10cm and completely effaced) and ready to push. We waited a few minutes for the doctor to arrive and by 6:15am I began to push. By 6:38am, Wyatt was born!

We were scheduled for induction on Thursday, May 22, but Wyatt had other plans! The delivery was SO fast, SO easy and nothing I did on Monday was out of the ordinary to indicate I would be holding my new baby only hours later -- Jack and I went to Target, had a lunch date at Chili's, played in the park for 2 hours and had dinner with friends. I was counting down the days until Thursday, but Wyatt preferred to come on Tuesday! It was truly like a switch flipped around 8pm on Monday night and Wyatt decided it was time to meet his parents and big brother.

Besides this being an easy delivery, it was such a wonderful experience to have a healthy baby boy!!! I was so relaxed this time around to have Wyatt stay with us for an hour after his birth and not have to be rushed off to the NICU like Jack. We had a great 2 days bonding in the hospital and trying to get the hang of breast-feeding. Wyatt has been latching well, but he is so sleepy that he often would rather sleep than eat! He has lost a bit of weight (which is to be expected), but hopefully in the next couple of days he will get back to where he started.

So far, Jack loves his little brother and has already tried to feed him some cheeseburger. He is always pointing at Wyatt and saying "baby, baby, baby"! He also likes to give him kisses. Hopefully, he will continue to love having a baby brother once he realizes Wyatt is here to stay...

We are home now and are settling in as a family of four!

Jack helping Daddy vacuum

Earlier this week Peter was vacuuming and Jack decided to help out. He grabbed his "popper" and copied what Daddy was doing. Take a look for yourself!

This is a big improvement for Jack as he has been terrified of the vacuum cleaner until very recently. He used to run as fast as he could in the other direction when he saw the vacuum come out of the closet.
