Wyatt is hungry
Do you think it is time to start solids?
The other day while I was eating an apple slice, Wyatt grabbed my hand and put the apple in his mouth. I was a bad mommy and let him suck on it for a minute. No complaints -- I guess he likes apples -- and the apples were probably much tastier than this paper plate he tried to eat today!!!

Wyatt is 4 months old
At Wyatt's 4 month appointment, he got 3 shots and weighed 12 lbs., 7 ounces and was 24 1/2 inches tall.
For comparison, Jack at 4 months old. Jack was almost 3 pounds heavier than Wyatt is at the same age!

Jack does the alphabet
I thought I would share a video we took of Jack tonight showing off his skills with his alphabet flashcards.
About a month before Jack turned 2, he became interested in letters. We already had the flashcards, so I thought I would pull them out and see how many he knew...surprisingly, it was more than half, so we practiced for a couple more days and he had the whole thing down!

Jack's Top Ten
On various blogs, I have seen people mention their current "obsessions". So, I thought I would do the same. Right now, no one in our family is quite as obsessed with things as much as the 2 year old living under our roof. Therefore, I am sharing Jack's Top Ten Current Obsessions...
1. Curious George

Jack's love of Curious George began when he was just a few hours old in the NICU. My friend Ginny gave him a stuff monkey to keep him company in his incubator. He has since slept with his monkey every night. We now have 4 copies of the same monkey, in case one gets lost or is dirty, but instead of rotating them in and out, he sleeps with all of them!
2. Crocs

The Crocs obsession really needs no explanation if you have read any of my previous posts. Basically, Jack refuses to wear any other shoes and loves the fact that he can take his Crocs on and off by himself. Unbeknownst to Jack, his Crocs will be taken away for fall/winter, so he will be wearing the various new sneakers I have bought him very soon! And no, I am not going to be talked into buying him those winter Crocs with the fuzzy stuff inside!
3. Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=63777340765793628&ei=OfPRSP7TKaO6qAPcgsC_Ag&q=carrie+underwood+before+he+cheats&vt=lf&hl=en

This obsession has only begun very recently. For the past couple of weeks, Jack will only listen to this song. I had it on a CD a while back, but Jack never protested listening to the other songs on the CD. As of late, he throws a huge fit and screams and cries until the song comes back on. he begs me, "song again!", "Mommy song again!". I have no idea why he has become so entralled with this song, but in the meantime it is on repeat in the car and I have quickly tired of this song, which I actually used to really like!
4. Bananas

Jack asks for at least 2 or 3 bananas per day, so we have to stay well-stocked. The funny thing is though, once the banana turns any shade of brown, Jack doesn't want it anymore. So, we have lots of partially eaten bananas in our kitchen. Usually Peter and I have to pick up the slack and eat the rest of the bananas Jack started on. Also at the grocery store, Jack picks out the bananas he wants to take home and he has to eat one on the spot. I kind of got worried that Safeway would be mad that Jack was eating the banana in the store, but he usually looks so cute doing it, non one has ever mentioned anything.
5. Daddy

Jack is definitely going through a daddy phase. Honestly some days he wants nothing to do with Mommy once Daddy gets home from work. Jack likes to sit in Daddy's chair, eat Daddy's breakfast bars, shower with Daddy, use Daddy's comb, watch Daddy shave, wrestle Daddy, try on Daddy's Crocs, etc. In the middle of the night if he wakes up he calls out for Daddy. If Mommy tries to comfort him, it won't do! He ONLY wants Daddy!!!
6. Eric Carle Alphabet cards

Jack can now recognize all the letters in the alphabet and these cards played a big part in him learning them. The cards have letters on one side and an animal beginning with the same letter on the other side. They are colorful with beautiful illustrations and it made learning his letters really fun! Some days, I catch Jack looking through the cards on his own and shouting out the letters he sees! There was also a short phase where he liked to sleep with the "E" card. Also, when we leave the house, he likes to say goodbye to his letters on the flashcards.
7. McDonald's fries

Unfortunately, Jack loves fries -- and McDonald's fries in particular. I am not sure if it is great marketing or the fact that I ate a lot of McDonald's at the end of my pregnancy with Jack, but he certainly knows that the golden arches mean fries!!! When I ask Jack what he wants for lunch, he always tells me "fries, fries, fries". Not exactly what a mother wants to hear, but I am able to limit the intake to once or twice per week and I have never bought him his own fries; I just give him a few of mine and he seems perfectly content.
8. Cars & Trucks (particularly Hot Wheels)

If you look at most of the recent pictures on this blog, Jack usually has a car in his hands at all times. He goes through different phases as to which specific car he carries around, however sometimes the car in his hand is forcibly changes because he loses them fairly frequently. Right now he loves his blue Volvo, but I can remember when he loved his black Mercedes or his yellow Hummer H2. I cleaned out my purse the other day and found 4 of the Hot Wheels cars in there. Cars are also all over our place as well. They can be a tripping hazard, but they really do keep Jack occupied. He can play for hours with his cars...rolling them along the windowsill, lining them up on the carpet or taking them on his racetrack. The other day I saw him showing his baby brother this cars too!
9. Nuby sippy cups

Funny this is one of his favorite things, considering I had such a hard time transitioning him from the bottle to the sippy cup. The cups are sold in 2-packs and come in a number of colors. For awhile, I bought all the colors for a nice variety, but now Jack has decided that he only likes the red and blue cups. He wants the red cups for milk and the the blue cups for water. These cups are great -- very soft silicone spout, BPA free, leak-free, fairly cheap and can be found easily in many stores. The only bad part is Jack uses the silicone spout to chew on and has chewed through almost all of the them, so now they do leak. I have had to replace so many sippy cups because of this bad habit, it's not even funny!
10. Jumping

Jack has been a great jumper since 18 months old. He likes to jump off curbs and to show his excitement or displeasure he also jumps...He is my "Jumping Jack".

Jack's first day of school!
A couple of months ago, Peter's company notified employees that they would be opening up a new daycare center. Those who were interested entered a lottery for spots because there is always more demand than available spots. Luckily we "won" the lottery and were able to enroll Jack at the brand new center without having to be put on the usual 6 month waiting list. This couldn't have come at a better time, now that Jack is 2 and is starting to get bored at home all day. Not to mention, I sometimes feel Wyatt is getting deprived of one-on-one time with Mommy.
Jack will be going to daycare 2 times per week for 6 hours per day. Even though it is a "daycare" per se, he is in what they call "junior preschool" and many of their activities are educational. He will learn to use scissors and glue, complete art projects, how to use utensils properly, how to drink from a glass, table manners, sharing, games, songs, etc. I am really excited for Jack to spend time with other children his age to socialize as well as learn how to be away from Mommy for a few hours per week.
All week I have been telling Jack that he will be starting school this week...we took a tour of the facility last week so he would be familiar with it when he arrived for his first day. Unfortunately, that did not reduce his anxiety for his first day!
We arrived at his "school" around 9:15am and most of the other kids were already there. Surprisingly, there were mostly boys in his class. I find this interesting since most of Jack's friends so far have been girls... I stayed in his classroom for a few minutes just to make sure he got settled and was comfortable. It was snack time around the time I arrived and the kids were having muffins and milk. Jack chose his muffin and took a few bites, but then announced that he had "pooped"! Somehow, I knew something like this would happen. So the assistant teacher and I changed him. Afterwards, I decided it was time to make my exit. Not surprisingly Jack did not like this idea and became borderline hysterical. He already had a bit of a runny nose, but the crying made him really snotty and he managed to wipe it all the way across his face. Great, in the five minutes he has been there he is on his way to becoming the smelly, snotty faced kid!!!
At this point, I felt like my being there was not going to help him adjust to his new surroundings, so I simply told him I loved him and that I would be back at 3pm to pick him up. I could hear him crying as I walked down the hallway, but I knew he would be okay and would calm down soon. From there, I took Wyatt to run some errands and quickly realized how much easier it is to get things accomplished without a toddler in tow! I missed Jack tons all day, but I knew he was in good hands.
Peter has the ability to log-in over the Internet to see Jack's classroom on closed circuit TV. He called me a few times throughout the day with updates. Jack obeyed the teachers during nap time and laid down with the other kids, but he woke up early. Peter also saw him playing with the other children and he appeared to be having a fun time.
When I arrived at 3pm to pick Jack up, he didn't see me at first. I wanted to observe him without him knowing I was there. He definitely seemed just fine...the teachers said he was only sad a couple of times throughout the day and that for today being his first time in a child-care setting, he did great! When I told Jack it was time to leave, he made sure to say good bye to each and every one of the children in the classroom as well as the teachers. It was very sweet.
Jack was a huge mess too! I guess it should have been expected since they do not allow sippy cups in his classroom and he had to use a cup by himself. I think most of it ended up on the front of him and his Crocs. They also served spaghetti for lunch...enough said.
At home Peter asked Jack if he had fun at school and if he wanted to go back... Jack said "NO!". But he did say he made friends....I guess we'll see how Day 2 goes.

Exciting morning!
Around 5am I woke up. Surprisingly, it wasn't because one of the boys needed me or was crying. Instead, I smelled a strong odor of natural gas. We went out to dinner last night, so I was pretty sure I didn't leave one of the burners to the stove on, however I wouldn't totally put it past myself since lately sleep deprivation has caused me to do some funny things. Recently I have put Jack's diaper on Wyatt and Wyatt's diaper on Jack, left the passenger door of the car wide open for six hours and have generally been misplacing things left and right.
I woke Peter up to see if he noticed the smell as well and he did. We did a quick search around the apartment and figured out it wasn't coming from either of the bedrooms or the grill on our balcony Most likely it was the kitchen, but we still couldn't figure out exactly where the smell originated, however the burners were turned OFF. So, we decided to call the after hours maintenance number and leave a message on the emergency line. We got a call back, however the maintenance man lived about 30 minutes away and wasn't scheduled to come into work until 8am! He tried calling security, but no one answered (great!), so he told us to call 911.
I checked the Internet to see if there was some kind of non-emergency line for the fire department, but there was not. So I really did have to call 911. I made sure to ask the dispatcher if they would actually have to use the sirens and he said that yes, they did. I did not want to make a big scene and was sort of relieved this was happening at 5am so none of the neighbors would be crowded around the fire truck trying to figure out what was going on! The dispatcher was quite good at reading his script and made sure to remind me at the end of the call, "don't panic! Help is on the way", even though I had just stated I didn't want to cause a big commotion.
I heard the sirens pretty quickly because the fire station is just down the street and I hurriedly tried to grab some diapers, formula and blankets in case we had to be out of our place for awhile. Silly Peter asked me if he'd have time to take a shower, but I told him the answer was "nooooooooooo!" We put both boys in their strollers and went out front. I guess the firemen were having trouble finding our apartment because after about five minutes Peter decided to go look for them while the boys and I waited in case they came up the stairs. Finally, Peter and four firemen appeared.
I was so embarrassed because I had just run quite a few loads of laundry but didn't get around to folding them yet, so it was piled by the washing machine and looked really tacky. We also had lots of boxes scattered around from the presents Jack received for his birthday and generally our place looked like a disaster. Along the lines of the advice to always wear clean underwear in case you are in an accident and you have to go to the hospital, you should always have a semi-clean place in case the fire department ever has to come in the middle of the night.
The firemen looked around and determined that we had a leak coming from the hose in the back of the stove, so they turned off the gas valve to the stove/range, but before they discovered this, two more firemen had to come in with a gas monitor, so we had a total of six fireman inside our place. We're still not sure why the leak all of a sudden started this morning since we have lived here 4 1/2 years with no trouble, but there was a 4.0 earthquake last week that could have possibly gotten it started, but who knows? It seemed like just as quickly as the fireman had appeared, they were gone. We were told to follow-up with maintenance to have them repair our stove, but it is 2:30pm and they haven't come yet. So, I am thinking we are going to have microwaveable burritos or some other fine delicacy for dinner tonight.
Finally, to top it all off, a brand new bottle of laundry detergent that was on top of the washer/dryer combo fell and broke wide open. I walked into the kitchen to get some breakfast and almost fell flat on my face because the detergent was slippery and clear, so I couldn't see it all over the floor. Needless to say, I spent the next 30 minutes trying to get that all cleaned up while listening to my tired boys whine and fuss because they woke up so early! What a day!!!

Two Year Old Pictures (and baby brother too!)
How time flies! First is Jack's 2nd Birthday Picture, followed by his 1 year picture -- look how much he has grown!

Today we went to the mall to have Jack's 2nd birthday pictures taken. And, like the past few times we have tried to have professional pictures done of him, he wasn't too happy or excited about doing so! Fortunately this time we had a photographer who didn't rush the session and finally got Jack to have a little fun during the process and smile some.

We did have some issues to deal with, such as Jack having one of the biggest poops of his life during the session as well as him telling me his sandals hurt (hence, the reason he is not wearing shoes in the picture) and then the ten minutes or so where he decided throwing his truck behind the backdrop and hiding back there was fun! So, I just decided it would be a good opportunity to take more pictures of Wyatt...at 3 1/2 months he is so smiley; I couldn't pass it up!
Here are Wyatt's "along for the ride" and "I'm so smiley and cute, who could resist taking my picture" pictures:

Jack's 2nd Birthday
On September 7, my sweet little baby turned 2. So now I am forced to call him my sweet little boy instead!

This past week was quite a week for birthday celebrations; Jack's girlfriend Mackenzie turned 2 on September 4 so we started with a trip to Chuck E. Cheese on Thursday night. The kids had tons of fun playing all the games there and they didn't want to go home! I tried to get a picture of Jack with Chuck E., but he was a bit scared of him.

On Saturday, we held a joint birthday party for Jack and Mackenzie on the neighborhood green. The party theme was Elmo which was great because Jack is a huge fan of the "Elmo's World" DVD's and Mackenzie watched the "Elmo's Potty Time" video to help with her potty training. The party had Elmo plates, Elmo napkins, Elmo cake decorations, and there was even an Elmo treasure hunt! Unfortunately, for some reason, not many people were able to attend their party due to conflicting engagements. For the first part of the party none of our invited guests showed up, however we met another group of people having a going away party in the same area with lots of toddlers. They joined in on Jack and Mackenzie's birthday party and made it lots of fun!!! The party ended up being a great success, but we had to cut it short because San Jose was experiencing a very rare heat wave with temperatures nearing 100 and everyone was about to melt.

Finally on Sunday evening, we met up with our friends Jim, Kim and their daughter Allison for one last birthday celebration at Chili's. Jim & Kim are friends from our birthing class and Allison was also celebrating her 2nd birthday on September 7. Kim and I kept each other company while in the hospital (and when our husbands went to In-N-Out Burger for lunch when we couldn't eat) and ended up delivering our babies 30 minutes apart!
On Monday morning Jack had an evaluation at Stanford because he was a NICU baby, however he "graduated" because his vocabulary was above his age level and he was able to pass all the cognitive tests with flying colors! We also had a follow-up visit with the neurosurgeon to discuss the MRI he had of his back a few weeks ago, but it was exactly a mirror-image of last year's scan, so he will not need to have another MRI for two years. All great news!!! Jack weighed in at 24 pounds, 11 ounces (10th percentile) and is 33 inches tall (25th percentile). I don't remember the size of his head, but it was in the 50th percentile.
This morning I am taking Jack to The Picture People for his 2 year pictures. Hopefully he will cooperate better than he did for his 18 month pictures, where he cried most of the time and we were only able to get 2 usable pictures! I requested a room that does not face the play area of the mall because it is very distracting for Jack and all he wants to do is go play!!! I will update with pictures if today is a success.
